When the air turns crisp and the leaves begin their colorful transformation, the United States bursts into a spectacle of vibrant hues and unique experiences. Fall, with its milder temperatures and picturesque landscapes, offers the perfect backdrop for unforgettable trips. Here are some of the best destinations I have visited for a fall getaway:
New England
Starting with the most iconic, the Northeast states, especially Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, offer a dazzling display of reds, oranges, and yellows. Drive along the Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire or wander through the small towns of Vermont for a quintessential fall experience.
The Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee
The national park straddling Tennessee and North Carolina is not just rich in biodiversity but is also a canvas of changing colors in the fall. The mist-covered mountains with a backdrop of fiery reds and golds are a sight to behold.
Aspen, Colorado
Named after the tree that turns a shimmering golden-yellow in the fall, Aspen is not just for winter sports. The Maroon Bells, two peaks in the Elk Mountains, provide an iconic autumnal reflection against Maroon Lake.
Door County, Wisconsin
This peninsula juts out into Lake Michigan and is known for its orchards. Fall is the best time to visit for apple-picking, wine-tasting, and the dazzling colors of the hardwood forests.
The Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia and North Carolina
This scenic drive is famous for its vistas and overlooks. In fall, the panoramic views are painted with shades of crimson, amber, and rust, making every turn a photo op.
Columbia River Gorge, Oregon
Cascading waterfalls, dense forests, and the winding river make this place magical in the fall. The mix of pine trees with changing deciduous trees creates a multi-hued wonderland.
Sedona, Arizona
While not the typical fall destination, the red rock formations contrast beautifully with the changing colors of the oak trees and poplars, offering a unique autumnal experience.
Napa Valley, California
Fall is the harvest season in wine country. The grape leaves turn orange and gold, and there’s a festive atmosphere as wineries are in full swing.
Whether you’re a nature lover, a road tripper, or just someone seeking a cozy fall atmosphere, Accountable has a destination for everyone during this magical season. Don’t forget your camera!
